Emo set to test new bio-fuel
October 29th, 2010The Northern Ireland Housing Executive has announced they will be working in partnership with Emo and the Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC) on a field trial involving a bio-fuel (bio-kerosene) – a mixture of 30% recycled vegetable oil and 70% kerosene. This fuel can be used in regular oil boilers after very minor modifications. In Northern Ireland around 70% of homes use oil as their main heat source.
The trial will consist of testing the fuel in 3 dwellings, one of which is a private dwelling and the other two will be NIHE dwellings. Of the two NIHE houses, one will involve modifications to an existing oil boiler and the second will be a new oil installation. The fuel will be mixed and supplied by Emo and the performance of the fuel will be monitored by OFTEC. OFTEC hope to use the results of the trial to roll out bio-kerosene as an alternative fuel and to lobby for incentives to promote it as a partially renewable form of energy.
