Newtownabbey teenager Sophie McCoo represented Ireland in the World Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo in October – and her talent has now made her a winner in the Emocommunity Sports Awards, in partnership with the Mary Peters Trust and promoted in the Belfast Telegraph.

The 16-year-old said: “The Japanese trip was an incredible experience and the training facilities provided were wonderful. “Competing at this top level was nerve-racking but also very exciting. My beam routine went well and I had no falls. I didn’t qualify for finals, so I then took the opportunity to watch the best gymnasts in the world in action. It certainly gave me the incentive to work hard and improve my skills.”

Sophie, who lives in Jordanstown, has already shown a commitment to hard work. In the lead-up to Tokyo, she trained for 24 hours a week, though this has now been reduced to a less-exhausting 14 hours. At home, the effort has paid off. She is a member of the Northern Ireland and Ireland senior squads and became Irish senior champion in May.

Sophie, who is a student at Victoria College in Belfast, started gymnastics in 2000 as a five-year-old when she joined the Abbey Gymnastics club, founded a few months earlier by Alison McMullan. “Alison has been my coach since day one and has always given me a lot of help and encouragement. After the Tokyo experience, my main aim is to qualify for another major event, the European Championships in Brussels in May.”

The Emo Sports Awards in partnership with the Mary Peters Trust are open to young sportsmen and women from the age of 12. You can nominate yourself or apply through a parent, coach, club or governing body. Each month’s winner will get £400. Full details from governing bodies or on the trust website: www.marypeterstrust.org

Emo, NI’s leading oil company has just announced the launch of their new EmoMotion Fuelcard. Refuelling company vehicles is an everyday chore, so it makes sense to do it efficiently; the less time needed for administration, the more productive a business can be.

- 24/7 online secure account access and online management

It’s a tall story getting taller – and it’s made basketball twins Conor and Aidan Quinn double winners in the Emo Sports Awards, sponsored by the leading oil company in partnership with the Mary Peters Trust and promoted in the Belfast Telegraph.

The brothers are 6ft 1in tall, but having turned 16 only in July they have plenty of time and growth potential as they reach for the top of their sport.

The Glengormley duo first became interested in basketball when they watched older brother Ciaran in action and, as eight-year-olds, they enjoyed fun sessions at St Mary’s on the Hill Primary School. Progress was swift as they went on to St Malachy’s College and joined the Belfast Star club, and already there is plenty to celebrate. They have been on teams that have won a succession of Ulster titles, and earlier this year were in the St Malachy’s team that won the under-16 All-Ireland Schools Cup, and the Belfast Star side that came third in the All-Ireland clubs competition.

In July the brothers represented Ireland in the European Championships in Macedonia – the only Northern Ireland players to be picked for Ireland this year.

Conor, the younger twin by 28 minutes, said: “Aidan and I enjoy a friendly rivalry, but while we may try to outshine each other, our big concern is to do our best for St Malachy’s and Belfast Star.

“We are thrilled with the success the teams have had – and long may it continue.”

The twins know it’s a big challenge to reach the pinnacle of basketball but, with the support of teacher coaches Adrian Fulton, Paul McCrory and Phil Molloy, they are, naturally, aiming high.

Aidan said: “It would be great to play Division 1 college basketball and become professionals in America, but that’s a dream way down the line. For now, we’re just concentrating on improving our games.”

The Emo Sports Awards in partnership with the Mary Peters Trust are open to young sportsmen and women from the age of 12. You can nominate yourself or apply through a parent, coach, club or governing body. Each month’s winner will get £400 and will be featured in the Belfast Telegraph.

Most of her new schoolmates had sports like hockey and netball in mind, but 11-year-old Niamh Spence quickly opted for swordplay when she went to Foyle College.

Five years later, the Derry/Londonderry student’s fencing talent has made her a winner in the Emo Sports Awards, organised in partnership with the Mary Peters Trust and promoted in the Belfast Telegraph.
Niamh said: “I also played hockey when I started at the college, but in third year I decided to concentrate on fencing. The sport is really challenging and exciting. I loved it from the start.

“I began by using the epee for seven or eight months, but I switched to the sabre and it’s now my speciality. It’s a lot faster discipline than the foil and epee.”

Speed has also marked her accumulation of honours and, in the last year, her wins have included the Irish Open, and the Carrickfergus and North West Opens. She fenced for Ireland at cadet (under 17) level in events in France and Germany, and qualified for the European Cadet Championships in Austria.

Representing Northern Ireland, she has competed in the senior five nations competition and the UK School Games – an event she will again be in next month in Sheffield.

Coach Mike Westgate, said: “Niamh has already won senior competitions in Ireland, but realises that fencing is now a very competitive sport and that it’s not easy to reach the top at international level.

“However, she is a hard worker and very determined, and I’m confident that many more honours will come her way.”

The Emo Sports Awards in partnership with the Mary Peters Trust are open to young sportsmen and women from the age of 12. You can nominate yourself or apply through a parent, coach, club or governing body. Each month’s winner will get £400 and will be featured in the Belfast Telegraph.

Strangford has done it again…

Shooter Grace Coburn was a winner in the Emo Sports Awards, organised in partnership with the Mary Peters Trust and promoted in the Belfast Telegraph.

Now Bridget Jacques, another teenager who lives in the Co Down village, has shown that she also has winning ways. The 16-year-old is one of the province’s most promising rowing prospects, after finding she was made to measure for the sport when she was 14.

The Methodist College student was tested by the Rowing Ireland High Performance Academy for various attributes – height, armspan, leg strength, arm strength and aerobic capacity. The tests were the same as those in the GB Rowing Team Start programme to identify potential Olympic gold medallists, and Bridget ranked well against data for girls three or four years older than her.

Since then, the statistics have been translated into excellent results. In March, Bridget and three other Academy and Methody girls – Claire Harrison, Lucie Litvack and Rebecca Shorten – were in an Irish junior women’s development boat at a Women’s Head of the River event. The race was over the Oxford-Cambridge boat race course and the foursome came 33rd out of 350 boats.

Bridget went on to win her category in the Irish National Indoor Championships and took a bronze medal in the single sculls at the National Schools Regatta in England, the largest regatta for junior rowers in the UK.
Most recently, there was success at the Henley Women’s Regatta, with Bridget, Claire, Lucie and Rebecca reaching the semi-finals of the coxed fours.

They were beaten by the eventual winners, the all-American champions, but were faster than all the other British and Irish entrants. Bridget said: “We were delighted with our performance at Henley, particularly as we had a tough draw.

“I love the competitive side of rowing. It can be nerve-racking, but at the same time it’s very enjoyable.”
Bridget has her sights on the World Junior Championships next year and in 2013, but Academy lead coach Nathan Adams is confident that success can extend to senior level.

He said: “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to reach the top in any sport. Bridget has these qualities and I feel sure she will fulfil her huge potential at the highest level.

Get your oar in. You don’t have to have rowed, but if you think you’ve got potential the Rowing Ireland High Performance Academy would like to hear from you. Boys should be aged 14 to 17 and taller than 188cm (6’2″); girls aged 14 to 20 and taller than 178cm (5’10″). Email nathan.adams@rowingireland.ie
